Sneaker male

A Bluehead Wrasse "Sneaker Male" I sculpted for my Dad's (belated) birthday. It's the fish he used to study for pretty much my whole life. Here's the story: fish don't usually touch when they copulate. The male and the female swim upwards together, the female spews out some eggs at the male, the male sprays some sperm at the female, things get fertilized and the circle of life continues. However, this allows non-dominant males to rush in when they see some mating about to happen, and shoot in a load of their own, giving them a chance to produce offspring without being the head honcho. These guys are called sneaker males. See, it's a pun. I kind of botched the paint job. Oh well.

Speriments Page 12

Early sketches for a pirate attack on page 12 of Speriments. I'm also slowly working my way through a website redesign.

A wish for fish

A little illustration of a bunch of fish for a Sylvia Earle speech excerpt in the November Commonwealth. All these guys don't live together like this usually but I have "artistic license."

Blog Redesign!

I finally finished a pretty heavy redesign of the blog. I'm kind of field testing the idea on here. If I still like it after a while, it'll spread like kudzu onto my main website. I'll post some actual new drawings and stuff I've been working on later, maybe Monday. Many thanks to citrusmoon for the psychedelically sweet wallpaper background.

Speriments

This is an early sketch of page three of the comic I've been working on with my brother, Toby. It's set in Corsica, and that's the city of Calvi over there on the rocks.

Retiring from the Giants tonight? Maybe last night? Who knows! I don't actually watch baseball.

Puppet Angles & Boldtype

More views of the puppet heads are up on my website. Also, I wrote the feature for Boldtype this month, on the supersweet Fantagraphics imprint, the Ignatz Series.

Severed heads

Above are the puppet heads for Daniel Featherdown (the former) and Peter Thorn (the latter). Thorn took a week, Featherdown only took three or four days. Thorn, unfortunately, fell on the carpet a lot, since I hadn't made a stand for him yet. That gray stuff on him is gunk he picked up. I just sent them both to Steve to be painted. I'll post more angles of them on my website tomorrow.

New Illustrations

I've been working on the puppet heads for most of this past week. Almost done with one, so I'll post some pictures later if I can get a camera. In the mean time, there's three new illustrations up at my site, two for the next Commonwealth and one older one for the Believer's Game Issue last September. I've got a scanner finally, so I'll be starting to scan in my Grandville books, old work and various doodles to add to the "Misc" section in the coming weeks.

Vacant Lot Finished

I just got back from a week in rural, alpine Colorado, a place mostly untouched by the internet. While I was there, I finished the comic I'd been working on, the Vacant Lot. I'm hosting it on the website, so click on the picture above to check it out. Probably not the final draft, but enough for now.

Vacant Lot

Before the motorcycle incident I was working on a six page wordless comic tentatively called "Vacant Lot." Now that I've got my arm back and can actually maintain line quality without zooming in to 600%, I'm going to try to finish it. This is the unfinished first page, drawn before the accident. Click on it for a bigger version, it loses a lot of detail in the thumbnail. The rest of the pages exist in various lesser states of completion. Between this and sculpting puppet heads for Steve, I think I'm pretty set for August.

Delicious!

I went into SF General yesterday for what I thought was a diagnostic. Instead, they cut off my cast with a buzz saw. I have to wear a brace over my right wrist for another month, but the thumb is free. My crappy digital camera doesn't really do justice to the hideous dead alien baby texture of the hand, but you can see the weird angles the wrist and thumb are twisted into.

LOCKED IN THE INTERNET'S WARM EMBRACE!!

I finally managed to pull my shit together & learn Dreamweaver. As such, Andysaurus is now an honest to god website, with some of my old comics and illustrations from before the broke-arm days. It's pretty sparse at the moment, but dammit, it's there. I'm gonna keep updating the blog, too, but I'm trying to figure out what to do with it once they take the cast off (T minus a week maybe? They've been distressingly vague). I might, on Steve's suggestion, have it serve as a place to hash out upcoming projects & a sketch diary when I find the time. My mother, on the other hand, thinks I should try to teach myself how to draw with my feet.

Happy 4th. It was a much, much needed break. I pretty much just hung out with Kathy & ate crab cakes.

More Thistledown Dirigible concept art for Steve. A bit gruesome. I'm still pretty ham handed with my coloring, haven't really used it too much before.

A drawing of Natalie Angier I did for work that we didn't end up using. Came out kind of wonky....

Fewer posts don't mean less working, just bigger projects. Another piece of Thistledown Dirigible concept is close to done. In the mean time, here's a rough draft I had laying around of another part of the website

I've been working on concept drawings for a puppet series by Steven P. Fromtling, former housemate and man about town. As I finish them, I'll post them here. I'm also trying to put together a website bit by bit. Here's the latest chunk, the main graphic for the illustration page.

I liked how the last one turned out so I did another in a similar style. Here is a fact about me: I love to draw beards. I don't often get around to it, though.

I should really note how long the drawings take, which is approximately forever.
