First Sets Sketch

The first sketch for the Frown Town sets. I'm trying to figure out a feel for the environment, but it'll need a lot more work.

Back in the USA (for a while now)

I've been back in the US since the 16th of November, but haven't gotten to posting here yet until now. We ended up going to Egypt, Israel and Jordan instead of Lebanon and Syria because of a visa mix up. Here're a few things I've been working on in the past two weeks:

1. A splash page from the old Corsica comic. I'm pulling it out, dusting it off, and trying to get a visual style nailed down & a script completed.

2. A strip for Threatmetrix that I had fun drawing.

3. The Frown Town website. Now up and operational!

I also did some sketches on my trip. I'll scan and upload them soon.

Second Frown Town Production Day

Another major push on Frown Town production brings the total to five heads (there's been another couple rounds since then, actually, so their numbers have swollen even more).

They start out as giant foam blocks we glue together and trace the templates onto.

Fancy lads, little sleep, larval beards.

First Frown Town Production Day

Photos from the first Frown Town puppet head production day. We got the foam for the heads from couch cushions salvaged in the Mission.

I am half Klingon.

Steven Foundling & children

Waving for the camera.

The locker of dismembered puppet children. On the top shelf is the felt we'll use for the hair, and on the second from the top shelf is the fleece which will become their skin.

Frown Town Moquettes

Most of the Sculpey moquettes for the puppet heads (Trey seems to have wandered off somewhere) with the early James prototype for scale.

Ashcan Magazine Illustrations

Three spot illustrations for a short horror story in Ashcan Magazine.

Website Redesign & Doppelganger

The Doppelganger's done and located here on my completely redone website. Saunter over to the miscellany page, or check out the new layout for the comics section. I'm going to be fixing up the look of the the misc subsections in the coming weeks, I've got a few ideas for improving their look and navigation (and scanning more Grandville illustrations and stamp collections!).

Frown Town head guides

The Doppelganger comic is essentially done, but for a few continuity corrections. I'll post it here soon, along with a much needed website reorder and revamp. In the mean time, below are some of the cut out guides for the puppet heads, all of them with and without hair and accessories. These are based on a series of sculpey moquettes I've been making the last couple of months from the original concept sketches. I don't have a nice camera or a competent photographer handy (I'm about as far as you can get), so I'll post a picture later.

King of the Cats

Taking a quick break from Doppelganger drudgery to do a 3-4 page comic based on a ghost story my old housemate David told me. This is the first, unshaded and only partially backgrounded page.

New Doppelganger Preview

I'm in the final lap for Doppelganger and I've been playing around with some new shading methods. Below is a group of five pages (pgs. 1, 11, 13, 20 & 21) previewing the new style. Pretty soon I'll be able to post an actual ETA for this thing to finally be done.

The Fell Beast

Sorry for the drop off in bloggáge. I've been working a whole, whole lot on the doppelganger comic, bringing a few sequences to near completion. I'll post those later. In the mean time, here's a b&w sketch with a spot color I made last night.

Inked and shaded version of the page I posted earlier. Still working my way through it, but there's light at the end of the tunnel.
