Hey there! Lauren Sommer and I have a story in the first issue of the new tablet comics-journalism magazine - Symbolia. It just debuted today! You can get the free preview issue (which my story is in) and subscribe to it in pdf or iPad form.

In other news, the Ned the Neuron book I was working on all summer is now in full release. Check it out!

Fantastic Story Character Sheets (Hospital)

Since August, I've been working on contract, doing the art for a comic called A Fantastic Story. I'm all done with the pencilling, nearing halfway done with the inking, and I'm slated to finish it up next month. Here's some of the character designs for one set of characters:

I'll post a few more character designs soon. As the project goes into colored, final art next month, I'll start posting some excerpted images of the comic, too.

IRENE and APE

I'll be at APE today and tomorrow, at table 408. Dave W and I are sharing the table and Irene, the anthology we put together with Dakota McFadzean will be making its west coast debut there! It also features Nate Wootters, Rachel Dukes and Jon Fine.

Here's the cover for it that I designed:
The story I've got in there is Come Into My Heart. As a super bonus, here's the character sheets I did for that before I started work on it:

I'll also be bringing one of the Frown Town puppets to the show. We'll be selling Frown Town posters and giving away these new promotional post cards:

So come and stop by the table! I'll be right next to my superbuddies Donna Almendrala and Jai Granofsky's table too.

The Adventures of Ned the Neuron

Hey internet! One of the reasons I've been not so active lately is that I've been hard at work for Kizoom since May! I've been doing the illustrations for their first science eBook for kids, The Adventures of Ned the Neuron. I just turned in the final art, so it seemed like a great opportunity to post a few excerpts.

Here's all the neurons in the Motor Cortex freaking out after a pain signal is activated.

This is a close up of a page (about 3x larger than what I'm showing here, with a BAJILLION neurons on it. It was really neat to draw, and took forever (the thicker lines between different groups represent different areas of the brain).

There's also a lot of educational content throughout the book, it's really a teaching tool with a fun story. Below is a static image of one of the educational pages I made.

Way back in May, when I was starting the project, I made a detailed style guide for all of the characters. This is an excerpt of that, featuring one of my favorites, Stella:

Kizoom has also just launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter. So head over there and toss some cheddar their way if you think like fun neuroscience books for kids are something there should be more of in the world.
