Fallow Fields

Dang! Between being in California, then Wisconsin, then playing catch up, I've let the blog go fallow for over a month! I'm mainly working on The Creeping Things right now. It's 56 pages, and I'm working on getting through the pencils all first before I start in on the inks. That makes for less stuff I can post up here, and I'm 36 pages into the pencils so far. I'll be trying to ink excerpts of it that I can stick up, though, as well as any of the screen prints and commercial stuff I've been doing on the sides.

It's true. I did. You can buy all of my minicomics, as well as a couple limited run screen prints. I also changed up the comics section of my site, so that it's a dedicated page on blog (which will make it much simpler to update) and filled with all my newer stuff, rather than the old crappy comics that were there before.

Two Stories Cover

I was in Montreal for ExpoZine this past weekend and had a blast! Saw wonderful things, stayed with friends and sold lots of comics. In addition to the first non-draft printing of The Man Who Built Beirut, I brought together "Squirrel" and "A Ghost" into a collection I called Two Stories. I even made a creepy self portrait for the cover!

I spent all of today screen printing another mask image. I'll post the one from last month and this new one soon.

Heads and Vans

Some new stuff for The Creeping Things. I've gotten to a good place with the script, and I spent this week working on the prep stuff for starting it. I decided to go with a different style than the one I'd used in these character concepts, so I redid the heads. I wasn't sure about the hairstyles, so I tried a few out:

After settling on a hair style for both of them, I did their head turns:

And finally, I roughed out a quick drawing of them standing to get a better idea of proportions and early costuming concepts.

A Volkswagon Vanagon also figured pretty prominently in the beginning of the story, so I did a some studies of one from a few different angles:

Right now I'm working on printing out two new mini-comics. The first is a revised edition of The Man Who Built Beirut, and the second one is a collection of A Ghost and Squirrel, both revised, with a sweet cover. I'll be hawking them up in Montreal at ExpoZine, along with a new screen print. I'll post some images once I'm done with the production.

Sorry for the pause in posting. The last couple weeks in Lebanon were wonderful and chaotic, followed by a few days of airline hell and a half week of awesome internet-less isolation in Colorado. But I found the the time to redo the end of Homebrew, which just about everybody had told me was too rushed. I took the former last page and stretched it out to three pages, which really improves the pacing. Check it out at the comic page!
Also, here's a couple odds and ends from the Toby project.

I've been working on a little thing (obviously with monsters) for a show recently, too. I'll post it up later this week.

Here's a couple pages from a comic project I'm working on this summer with James Parks. It's pretty fun to do because it's got goblins and trolls in it, the kind of monsters I usually find myself idly sketching, but that never actually make it into my comics. It's nice to be able to let myself get a little looser and more cartoony with this stuff.

I've got to rework the last panel of that first page so that the little guys are still lining up, rather than beginning to cross the bridge.

MoCCA and Homebrew

I've been working my fingers to the bone on the final project for school here (now called Homebrew). I've included a preview of the first page at the bottom of this blog post. Things have been going well on it, I've got 14 pages inked, with 6 to go. Those six are pencilled pretty tight, though, so I don't think they'll take too long. I want to go back through it all and heap on the fine details once I know it's in the bag, though, so I won't be idle!

I'll also be at MoCCA Festival in New York City this weekend, selling comics and tabling with fellow CCS'ers Melanie Gillman, Dakota McFadzean, Nate Woottersand Bill Bedard. If you're in the city, it's Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. I put together a collection stuff from CCS, and earlier.

I've also got a few things on the walls of the Nisus Gallery in Portland, OR. The show runs until the 30th of April.

We've had a bit of a warm snap up in White River, and I'm done with the children's book project. Joe Sacco is here right now, and some classmates and I had a drink with him at the bar. Also, my parents survived the Christchurch earthquake. Life is... good.

The assignment that the images below are from was to create a pitch ready copy of a children's book in 2 weeks, with two finished spreads, a finished first page, a completed cover, and readable sketches for the rest of it. I'll post pictures of the actual book I made once I get it back. For now, here are some excerpts from "Amanda and the Monster." Click on any image for the blow up!

Curse of the Sea Hag (part 2!)

The first big project we've had since the semester began is The Golden Age. We were split into groups of six, and had to finish, script to color printed issue, a facsimile of a 1940's golden age era genre comic under the eye of an editing member of the faculty. My group was High Seas genre themed under Jason Lutes. Our comic was called AVAST!: Curse of the Sea Hag. I wrote, thumbnailed and inked the following excerpt (part 2, pages 9 through 20). Bill Bedard pencilled, Nate Wootters also wrote, also thumbnailed and colored the ever loving hell out of it. The other people on my team (Amelia Onorato Donna Almendrala and Sean Knickerbocker) also had amazing section, and the whole thing turned out pretty great.

Mea culpa, mea culpa for my disappearance from blog-landia. I was on vacation from school, caught up in work, and seeing both my and Kathy's families!

Fwed, Romance and Living Statues

Diary comic from this week is about Fred, the cat I grew up with. I realized that when you're drawing comics all the time, writing diary comics can become a feedback cycle from hell. So I turned to that gold mine that every artist delves into at some point: dead family pets.

This will be the first in a pretty long series (we had a lot of animals), hence the title of "1. Fwed." I'm still working out a title for the whole thing.

Next up is a fun assignment we had doing mock romance covers.

I came up with the title "Teenage Tears" and had a blast. The original artists working in romance comics in that era just didn't know what the heck those kids were up to, but sales were slumping and they were desperate to appeal to the youth culture. The results were hilarious.

I also did design for a neat little story on living statues that the Bold Italic published last week:

Evocation

Here's the project I've been working on for a little while: Evocation! It's actually got jokes and not just sadness and death. But still demons. I had a lot of fun with this one. It's really the first time I've brought spot blacks into the faces and figures in my comics. It took some learning, but I think it's a good direction for me. I've been AWOL from this blog for quite a while. Mostly due to working like a demon on Frown Town and blogging the process. Some highlights from the blog:

Now the puppets are all finished and we're raising money to make the first episode.

In the mean time, I've also redone my illustration portfolio and added in a lot of stuff I've done over the past few months that I didn't post here. I'm changing my ways, and bringing this blog back from the dead, so I'll hopefully be posting quite a bit more. I'm attending the Center for Cartoon Studies in the fall and I doubt I'll lack for content!

Corsica Landscape Mark Three

If you don't like something, try, try, try again until your eyes bleed. I thought the landscape for page four of the Corsica comic (title pending) had turned out pretty wonky:

Almost everything could use improving. The grass looked flat, the bushes looked like little spike animals, the rocks looked like melting ice cream and the mountains looked like giant sand dunes. Pretty much the only things I was happy with were the town, the clouds and the ocean. And that van, Christ that van.
Most of the comics I've done thus far have relied on super stylized backgrounds that took forever to draw, stuff like The King of the Cats and The Vacant Lot. I'm actually trying to evoke a real place with this comic, though, so I had to teach myself how to draw landscape for real, rather than relying on hundreds of tiny blades of grass and tree branches to fudge it.

I always liked how Craig Thompson drew fields of grass, so cribbed a bit from him on this page.

This one's trying to figure out the techniques Eric Shanower uses to create the wonderfully epic landscapes he uses.

And here's the redrawn version. The new van's still a bit off to me. It kind of looks like it's floating above the road, rather than driving along it. But still, I'm getting closer to the look I want for this comic.

I've been back in the US since the 16th of November, but haven't gotten to posting here yet until now. We ended up going to Egypt, Israel and Jordan instead of Lebanon and Syria because of a visa mix up. Here're a few things I've been working on in the past two weeks:

1. A splash page from the old Corsica comic. I'm pulling it out, dusting it off, and trying to get a visual style nailed down & a script completed.

2. A strip for Threatmetrix that I had fun drawing.

3. The Frown Town website. Now up and operational!
